Peter Collier QC has delivered the first Northern Province lecture of 2020 on the subject of Safeguarding

January 29, 2020

The Ecclesiastical Law Society welcomed the Rt Worshipful Peter Collier QC, Chancellor of the Diocese of York, as the speaker at the first of the Society’s Northern Province Lecture series for 2020. His topic was “Safeguarding: From Ball and Banks to Beech via Bell.” Chancellor Collier drew on his many years of practice at the bar as he took his audience through, decade by decade (from the 1970s to the present day) watershed moments in the areas of crime and child care during that time, and the Church of England’s evolving response to the challenges in this area within the Church. He concluded with some thoughts on ways in which the Church can develop its approach to risk assessments. The question and answer section demonstrated how particularly relevant and interesting the full room found this talk to be. The Society is indebted to Chancellor Collier for his engaging lecture.

The ELS is grateful to our lecturer for making available an expanded text of the lecture, which can be downloaded by clicking here.
