The Bishop in Parliament – lecture delivered by the Rt Revd Dr Martin Warner

July 6, 2023

On Wednesday 5 July 2023, the Rt Revd Dr Martin Warner, Bishop of Chichester and Vice-Chair of the Ecclesiastical Law Society, delivered a London lecture on the ‘Bishop in Parliament’. The wide-ranging and stimulating lecture cited the wartime parliamentary speeches of Bishop George Bell and the 2010 address of Pope Benedict XVI in Westminster Hall, and reflected on current issues including the seal of the confessional, safeguarding, and LLF. The Bishop answered questions from the floor, after which the discussion continued over refreshments.

This lecture also marked the last occasion at which the Society will be able to meet at Minerva House, next door to Southwark Cathedral. Winckworth Sherwood are moving offices and so the venue will no longer be available. Chairing the lecture, the Revd Stephen Coleman thanked the partners and staff of Winckworth Sherwood for their welcome and hospitality at Minerva House over many years.
